An Affiliate or a Publisher - Which is better?

   Posted by: admin   in Business

First thing first - As you can see I’ve been busy lately. I did not posted any new post for some time so I feel like I owe my loyal subscribers an apology. Sorry guys…

A few days ago someone sent me a short email asking ‘Which is better?’ to be a publisher or to be an affiliate. At first I wanted to send him a short email of my own saying that I don’t know the answer. After thinking about it for a while I gathered that it’s not the answer this guy is expecting from me. The answer to his question is a complex one.

Becoming an affiliate is great. You don’t have to worry about writing your own ebook (or creating any other info product). All you have to do is promote it and get paid a commission for sales generated by you. Great isn’t it? Well, it’s not always as easy as it seems. As an affiliate you have to be ready to spend a lot of time and sometimes a lot of money until you finally get a result.

On the other hand, becoming a publisher seems great as well. You just have to write an ebook (or create some other information product), join an affiliate network such as Clickbank, and then sit back and watch your affiliates promote it. By now I can see you calculating the odds of making money as an affiliate versus making money as a publisher. It is confusing. While affiliates can promote a large range of products publishers has to rely on their single (or very few) ebook. Another thing to consider is the fact that many publishers do not succeed in recruiting enough affiliates to promote their products. However if they do and if their ebook is a good one, the sky is the limit!

As you can see each of the ‘players’ has its own advantages and disadvantages. Choosing to be an affiliate or a publisher is not an easy decision at all. I believe that talented people that know their way in writing should try to become publishers. They must be able to write about interesting topics. Keep in mind that this is a hard task, for you can find endless ebooks lists just about any topic you can imagine. However, if everything goes well, the reward can be fantastic!

There are some very good tutorials about how to write a bestseller ebook. You can find those tutorials here.

Links, Links and some more links

   Posted by: admin   in Business

There are many ways search engines use to check on the popularity of a website. One of those ways is by checking the number of links placed on other websites that point to the website being examined a search engine. The more links the better. This is the reason why so many webmasters are spending a lot of time and money, exchanging links with others.

However, these days it is not enough to exchange links. Search engines have become much more sophisticated. Several search engines also check for relevancy. How do they do that? They ‘read’ the content of the referring website. If the content resembles your websites’ content your website gets a higher rank. If it doesn’t, search engines may punish you and give your website a lower rank. If you run an online shoe store you shouldn’t exchange links with someone who runs an online book store.

There are many great online link exchange services out there. Most of them can save you a lot of time and money. If you are not sure which of those services fits you best, I suggest searching for online reviews. Good luck and don’t forget that exchanging links is only one way to promote your site.

Banner Ads v. Text Ads

   Posted by: admin   in Business

When it comes to online advertising, there is a big debate between webmasters. Some webmasters think that Banner Ads is the most effective way to advertise their sites while others believe that Text Ads are the best. Those who use Banner Ads often argue that an average web surfer will not click on an Ad if he doesn’t actually see the product promoted (Or a teaser of it). Others claim that the Banner Ads days are over and that Text Ads rule.

Several online researches show that those who prefer Text Ads advertising are the most likely right. It was found in those studies that people tend to ignore Banner Ads. Banner Ads annoy people, especially animated of flashing Ads. On the other hand, people seem to interact with Text Ads. The reason for this is that Text Ads, if implemented right, look like a part of the general text that is presented.

As you probably understand, I’m a fan of Text Ads advertising. I tried Banner Ads but with not much luck. However, Text Ads did a great job for me. One thing you should remember about Text Ads is that you have to be creative. Advertising a boring Text Ad such as ‘Buy a Digital Camera from us’ will end up doing a poor job. You should phrase your Ad in a way that people will want to click it. Make it funny, mysterious or whatever comes into your mind, but make sure people who read it will know what product or service is being offered. Do remember that clicks cost you money. You do not want to lose money because people clicked your Ad expecting some other product or service.

Don’t be tempted

   Posted by: admin   in Business

Running a great website that attracts a lot of traffic is exciting. It gives you many opportunities to make money online. But, letting temptation rule you are one of the most dangerous situations that might cause you to lose money. There are many programs out there that offer webmasters to put advertisements on their sites. It sure is tempting. Those programs offer you a part of their gains. Most of them pay you whenever someone clicks on an ad and some even pay you whenever someone visits your website and sees their ads.

Beware! There are programs out there that do not tell you exactly which ads are they going to place on your site. One of my friends was shocked when he found out that ads containing adult only materials are being placed by such a program on his gadget
store website. He found out about it only when a customer of his wrote him an angry email. He also noticed that he is losing traffic fast.

Stay away from programs that do not state which kind of ads is about to be placed on your website. Always check for other webmasters reviews about a program you are considering joining. Other webmasters experience might save you from getting into trouble. Be sure to join programs that let you define which type of ads will be presented on your site. Any other program might harm your websites’ reputation.

Impress your visitors

   Posted by: admin   in Business

As you probably noticed we took a short break and did not update our Blog. The truth is that we were busy modifying our main site, MamaDeals.com. We took some tough decisions doing so. Our loyal customers became used to the old look of MamaDeals.com, a look we have decided to change.

The first thing we did was deciding on a new template for our site. We examined hundreds of templates until we found the perfect one. Actually, we did not choose that template just because we loved it. Before deciding on the template, we conducted a survey along our friends and family. This specific template was the big time winner of all the templates we found.

Dealing with the template issue took us a long time. However, we believe it is important to choose the right template for people look at the way a website looks before spending the time to read its’ text content. Statistics show that if the look is not appealing, most of the sites’ visitors will click their way out.

After choosing the new template, we went on looking for some more graphics in order to make our site a bit more exciting than our competitors’ websites. At first we thought about adding some new ‘vector’ graphics. It seems that many webmasters like vector graphics. After giving it much thought we have decided not to use those graphic elements at this stage. We came to the conclusion that people like to see…people. Knowing this we have placed pictures of several models on almost every single page of our site. We hope that people will like the new look of our products pages as much as we do.

Another thing we did is taking special care of our sites’ menu bar. We improved the way it looks and feels. It is now much easier to navigate within MamaDeals.com. We also added googles’ search engine box to our site, which helps people find exactly what they are looking for within it.

We are not done yet. There is much to do. We are working very hard to improve our sites’ visitors experience. It will take time and money but eventually it will pay (we sure hope it will…).

We invite you to take a look at the new MamaDeals.com. We welcome all feedbacks so don’t be shy!

Other people content

   Posted by: admin   in Business

Everybody agrees that in order to drive traffic to your site you have to fill it with relevant content. These days you can find numerous offers online to place other people content on your site. Those offers are tempting for it takes a lot of time to generate your very own content. Many of those content providers let you place a short script on one of your web pages which instantly fills it with content. The main problem is that this content is not exactly what webmasters are looking for. Search engines tend to crawl web pages seeking for relevant content. However, search engines also look for identical content. Rumor says that the big search engines “punish” websites that use copied content. The content search engines are looking for is an original content. This is why you better write your very own content instead of relaying on other people content.

Another reason why it is better to write your own content is the fact that content providers usually place a link to the author web page or to their website within that content. By doing so they actually ’steal’ your sites visitors. Furthermore, note that most people write content that is relevant to their services, websites and etc. Irrelevant or offensive content can harm your reputation.

As you can see, writing your own content is the best thing to do. If you do not know how to generate content by yourself, you can hire a professional to do it for you. There are many free lancers out there who would be more than happy to assist you. Choose yours carefully after reviewing his or hers work. Sure, it costs money but if you hire a pro it can pay. Relevant, high quality content can do the difference between an occasional visitor and a loyal customer.

Outsourcing paradise

   Posted by: admin   in Business

One of the hardest tasks every webmaster copes with when running an online business is maintaining it. When you run a business website you should always keep it up-to-date. Failing to do so may result in unfortunate misunderstandings and unhappy customers that will most probably not come back for more…

Nobody I know of has enough time to maintain a website that has over 10 web pages. Imagine updating each and every page several times a day i.e. whenever a product price is changed or when you decide to start a sale campaign and etc.

This is where the outsourcing solution comes in. Let others who have the time and skill do the job for you. It costs money but it sure is a real time saver and time as you well know is money.

The time saved can be used for other important tasks such as promotion for you online business. As you probably understand if you use the outsourcing solution well it can do wonders to your business.

Pictures, Photos and some more Pics!

   Posted by: admin   in Business

When selling online it is not enough to describe your products or services. This is why almost all online sellers I know of place pictures of their products on their websites. The average surfer finds it easier to decide whether to purchase a product online or not when he sees its’ picture. Better yet, placing several pictures of that product (i.e. snapshots taken from different angles) can work well for your online business.

But placing a photo of the product you are selling is not enough either. Did you know that when indexing your site, many search engines such as Google also index the pictures on it? Are you familiar with the option to perform an image search?

Many people use the image search option when searching for a product they like to buy. By performing an image search they have the opportunity to actually see the product and find out if it looks the same as the one they saw in a catalog or in a ‘real world’ shop. This is what this post is about. Nobody is going to come across your products pictures if you do not ‘Alt tag’ those pictures.

So what is ‘Alt tag’?

This HTML piece of code is the way you can place an alternative text that is associated with a photo or many other web page graphics. When a visitor to your site drifts the mouse over that picture the text is being displayed. Search engines love ‘Alt tag’. It enables them to index pictures more effectively. The search engines actually ‘reads’ the ‘Alt tag’ and by doing so learn what is the photo or graphic that is on your site about. So, when you design your website don’t hesitate to place photos of your products. However do remember to ‘Alt tag’ those pictures so people will be able to find it and visit your website.

The importance of a privacy policy

   Posted by: admin   in Business

I love running my very own website. Running a successful website gives lots of satisfaction. I believe that I share this wonderful feeling with thousands of other webmasters. However I never forget that it takes two to tango. As much as I enjoy my online experience so should my websites’ visitors.

One of the things I’m always checking when registering as a new member to a website is its’ privacy policy. I hate it when someone uses the information I provided in ways I didn’t plan he would. It is OK with me if an online book store uses the information I provided it in order to suggest me the books or ebooks that might be of interest to me. It is totally wrong if that book store sells my information to third parties or shares it with them without my explicit consent. This is why I do my best to check the privacy policy of a site before I register.

I strongly believe that any serious webmaster should post on his site a detailed privacy policy, letting his sites’ members and occasional visitors know what kind of information is collected about them and how it is used. Word says that the big search engines expect any website to contain a privacy policy and ‘punish’ those who haven’t by showing less search results containing them. If this is true I can not agree more. Webmasters who fails to tell the truth to their websites’ members and visitors shouldn’t enjoy the search engines good services.

If you care about your visitors and online business as much as I do you should post a detailed privacy policy. Please note that posting it is not enough. Privacy policies tend to change over time i.e. these days Google is asking those webmasters who use its’ AdSense program to update their sites’ privacy policy. If you change your website privacy policy you must notify your websites’ members and visitors about the changes made. You can do it by sending an email or by posting a message on your site. People will appreciate you for letting them know about the changes you have made.
